Learning Outcomes

  • We shall cover the material presented in Chapters 1-6 of the text. Students are expected to master fundamental concepts in linear algebra, such as vectors, subspaces, determinants, eigenvalues and eigenvectors of matrices, etc. and utilize these concepts and numerical implementation learned from this course to solve problems in context.

Homework and Quiz

  • Homework will be assigned after each lecture, see HERE for the assignments. We do not plan to collect homework. But you are supposed to do them all. Remember: the more problems you do, the better you understand the material. The homework is not pledged. You are encouraged to discuss the problems. However, each student is responsible for the final preparation of his/her own homework papers.
  • There will be approximately one quiz per week on Tuesday, in the beginning 15 minutes of the lecture. The quiz problems will be either the same as, or very similar to those from the homework. Thus, if a student has made a good attempt at the homework, he/she should do well on the quiz. The lowest quiz grade will be dropped from the final grade calculation.
  • Last update: 11/15, Quiz 9 and solution are available.
  •  Download Quizzes and Solutions.

Exams

  • There will be two 75 minutes in-class midterm exams and a 150 minutes cumulative final exam. The tentative dates of the exams are listed as follows.
  • Midterm 1 Tuesday, September 21st, in class.
Midterm 2 Tuesday, November 2nd, in class.
    Final Thursday, December 9th, 4:00pm - 6:30pm.
  • Exams are under the honor code. Be sure and hand in all the work you do on each problem. Good luck!
  • Last update: 11/15, midterm 2 and solution are available.
  •  Download the Exams and Solutions.

Grades

  • Your grade are distributed as below:
  • Quizzes » 20% (drop lowest)
    Midterms » 20% each
    Final exam » 40%
  • You can monitor your grades via Blackboard.
  • The letter grade will be mapped by: 90+ A; 86+ B+; 80+ B; 76+ C+; 70+ C; 66+ D+; 60+ D; 60- F.
